Security Strategies for Emergency Response, Conflict Resolution, and Leadership

Sunday, September 14, 2025

Sponsored by

WNC Jewish Security Task Force

at Congregation Beth HaTephila

43 N. Liberty Street, Asheville

The training program has been intentionally divided into two distinct sessions, each tailored to
address the specific responsibilities and operational challenges faced by distinct roles within our
teams. By addressing both the immediate tactical needs of our greeters and door monitors and the
strategic decision-making requirements of our leadership, this program is designed to cultivate a well-
rounded, highly effective security team capable of safeguarding our community under diverse
circumstances.
The training is a unique one-time offering to the member institutions of the WNC Jewish Security Task
Force. It complements and follows The Community Security Service (thecss.org) Synagogue Level 1
training for greeters and security team members. Working again with Troysgate, based in Lenoir, NC,
this training complements and practically extends CSS’s curriculum to the most likely incidents.
The training addresses the following needs identified by the planning team:
a) A morning session designed for door greeters/monitors and security team members
b) An afternoon session for our security team leadership.

Please ensure that you invite your door greeters and monitors to the morning
session. The entire cost of the program is underwritten by a grant; however,
registering in advance is required, and space is somewhat limited.

9:00-12:00noon Morning Session (General Training for Greeters/Door Monitors and Security Team)
Emergency Evacuation Training and Crowd Control: Recognizing that safety during emergencies
requires clear procedures and coordinated efforts, this segment will educate participants on the
efficient evacuation of individuals while ensuring that vulnerable populations, including minors,
individuals with special needs, or those with mobility challenges, are evacuated.
Vetting Visitors: Frontline personnel play a crucial role in preempting security breaches. This training
will cover initial assessment and contact, identity capture, behavior analysis, and context matching, all
of which lead to decisions regarding entry permission.
Removing Belligerents: This training module focuses on safe and controlled methods for managing
disruptive behavior at door entry points. It aims to equip personnel with tactical know-how to de-
escalate situations and, if necessary, safely remove individuals who may pose a threat.

12:00noon-1:00pm Lunch Break

1:00-4:00 pm Afternoon Session (Security Team Leadership Training)
Verbal Judo/Conflict Resolution: Effective communication is a cornerstone of security
management. This module will train leaders in advanced de-escalation techniques, emphasizing non-
confrontational communication strategies to manage unfamiliar individuals and known congregation
members.
Handling Unruly Individuals, Groups, and Protests: Given the unpredictable nature of public
interactions, this session will equip security leaders with the skills necessary for rapid intervention. It
focuses on the practical aspects of managing disruptive crowds and maintaining a safe environment
during public dissent.
Crisis Decision-Making Planning: Under pressure, making the right decision quickly can be the
difference between order and chaos. This part of the training will delve into effective crisis
management practices and cover current legal considerations, such as the proper execution of pat-
downs and manual inspections, to ensure that every decision is swift and compliant with legal
standards.
