Sheldon Neuringer grew up in a home where Yiddish was used as much as
English. His doctoral dissertation explored US immigration policies affecting the
hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe. And then years later,
he attempted to translate a Yizkor book written in Yiddish by Holocaust survivors from
his parents’ ancestral shtetel in Poland.
Several years ago, all of these experiences resulted in his writing “For the Love
of Yiddish,” a short story focusing on two elderly Jewish men enrolled in a course at a
recreation center in a condominium complex in Boynton Beach, Florida, whose
conversations reveal experiences with and attitudes toward this ancient language of
Ashkenazic Jewry.
