Course Description:
This will be a course in basic Hebrew. We will learn to read and write the Hebrew alphabet. In writing, we will learn the block letters as well as script which is used in all written communication. We will then learn the vowels and how to pronounce words. We will then begin doing continual review via reading exercises using what we have learned with a focus on correct pronunciation of simple words. Simple vocabulary, grammar and the structure of the Hebrew language will also be introduced. This course is appropriate for students with no prior knowledge of Hebrew as well as those with some background who desire a good refresher. After completing this course you will be well prepared to begin the followup course of Prayer Book/Siddur Hebrew which builds on all the skills learned in this course. That course will continue to develop vocabulary and grammar aimed at reading and understanding the Siddur and ultimately Torah and Tanakh. The pace of the course will be responsive to the needs of the participants, making every effort to not overwhelm learners by moving too quickly or bore students by moving too slowly. All study materials will be furnished but learners should have a notebook to take notes and to practice their writing.
