According to the 2020 Pew Research report, close to 50% of our USA Jewish community is over 50. We are living longer and better. 11/4 Saturday – Two Opportunites

Rabbi Address will share a D’var Torah: Vayera: Vayera as a family dynamics textbook

Following Kiddush Lunch, Rabbi Address will present:
The Art of Caregiving: How does Jewish tradition view this new life stage of caregiver?
From the 5th Commandment to a detailed Talmudic discussion, we will explore how our tradition approached this issue and even anticipated many of the challenges we face today.

New Rituals for New Life Stages

In this session we will explore some of the growing number of revisioned and creative prayers and rituals that have been and continue to be created to speak to our new life stages. Among those we will examine: signing an advanced directive, removal of a wedding ring after mourning, older adult cohabitation without marriage, on a diagnosis of dementia, revisioning adultery in light of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Rabbi Richard F Address, D.Min. Is the founder and director of Jewish Sacred Aging®, the web site jewishsacredaging.com and hosts the weekly Seekers of Meaning podcast/tv. Ordained in 1972, Rabbi Address has served at congregations in California and New Jersey as well as serving on the staff of the Union for Reform Judaism for over three decades, first as regional rabbi for the Pennsylvania Council and then as founding director of the URJ Department of Jewish Family Concerns. These positions led to the creation in 2014 of Jewish Sacred Aging, now the largest program dealing with the impact of longevity on the Jewish community. Rabbi Address the author and editor of numerous books and articles that touch on the issue of our own aging and Judaism’s response. He also is adjunct faculty at HUC-JIR in New York and teaches in the Doctor of Ministry program as well as at Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva Univ. in their Certification program in Gerontology and Palliative Care. He chairs the Jewish advisory group for Samaritan Hospice in Southern New Jersey and also is a Melton Adult School teacher.
